If you are just starting out on your spiritual journey and not sure what to read here are 5 books that can take you deeper into spirituality.
1.The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer
The Untethered Soul is a spiritual classic because it is well written, practical, and easy to read. The book is like a meditation; guiding us on an exploration of the self. It shows us that before we can realize who we are we must recognize that we are not “who we think we are”. One of the challenges many of us face when embarking on the spiritual journey is transcending the rational mind. What makes this book special is that it gently pulls us towards deeper realization without forcing us to make momentous leaps. This is a potent read both for those just starting their spiritual journey and for those who are further along the path.
2. Be Here Now By Ram Dass
Be Here Now is my favorite spiritual book of all time. It documents the spiritual Journey of Harvard professor Richard Alpert, who takes a boatload of psychedelics, goes to India, meets his guru, and becomes one of the most popular western spiritual teachers of our time. The first part of the book shares his remarkable story. The second part is like a profound psychedelic trip full of vibrant visuals and soul-touching insights. The third part of the book is a spiritual cookbook full of resources and practical tips to help deepen one’s spiritual practice.
3. Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind by Shunryu Suzuki
A classic intro to Zen, Zen Mind Beginner’s mind shows us the freeing possibilities of meditation. Shunryu outlines the essentials of meditation from posture, breath, and attitude. An easy and short read whose simple wisdom penetrates deeper on each subsequent read.
4. The Autobiography of a Yogi by Swami Yogananda
The Autobiography of a Yogi details the life of Paramahansa Yogananda, an Indian Yogi who brings the spiritual practice of Yoga to America. Steve Jobs is said to have read this as a teenager and then once a year ever since. He even had it handed out at his funeral. Probably the least practical book on the list but also the most mind-expanding. This book is super far out and will make you question everything you ever thought to be true. A part of you may think that most of this is nonsense but another part of you will think but what if?
5. Awareness by Anthony De Mello
“Awareness” is a transcript of a series of talks given by spiritual Teacher Anthony De Mello. This book has a brash tone with a simple message “Wake the fuck up”. It is the most advanced spiritual book on this list but one that is still highly accessible. Keep it close and revisit it often.
